Best Game Manhwa: Esper’s Game

Esper’s Game novel’s story is focused on a legendary action VR-based Battle Field game, for which South Koreans have been famous. South Korea’s fame in Battle Field game in Esper’s Game is a result of Seomun Yeop, the strongest among all Seven Esper Heroes, and also the legendary former player of the Battle Field game.

The start of Esper’s Game chapters involves the stories that South Koreans believe the legendary Seomun Yeop has died sacrificing his life to save the lives of other Esper Heroes. Now, the Espers have lost their superpowers. As a result, South Korea’s National Team has never won any tournaments.

Such a shameful record makes Baek Jeho, the coach of the Korean Association of Battle Field Team (another name for the National Team), thinks of resigning for good. Just when fate seems darker to everybody else, Seomun Yeop appears out of the blue. He is still alive, and furthermore, his appearance doesn’t age.

Problem: Yeop doesn’t want to play Battle Field anymore and he wants to enjoy a leisurely and normal life. However, the public continues to make scenes to force Yeop to play once again… And Yeop doesn’t have any choice but to play.

Part 1: Meet The Characters Of Esper’s Game

Seomun Yeop

Esper's Game Yeop

The strongest of all Seven Esper Heroes, it’s no wonder that Seomun Yeop becomes the legendary Battle Field player in Esper’s Game. Seomun Yeop is actually still alive despite people’s beliefs that he might die as a result of saving the rest of the Esper Heroes in a dungeon. He was only fatally injured.

Unlike his other peers in Esper’s Game, Seomun Yeop doesn’t age. He also seems to suffer from the great trauma from that dungeon accident that he avoids all scenarios and attempts to force him to play Battle Field once again. So, let’s see how far can he avoid his destiny.

Baek Jeho and Hayeon

Esper's Game Jeho and Hayeon

Baek Jeho of Esper’s Game novel used to be Seomun Yeop’s most faithful pupil. Now that he has miserably failed in bringing the National Team to victory, he is thinking to quit, until he meets his former teacher once again and shares stories with him.

The stories in Esper’s Game first introduce Baek Hayeon as the ace of the Korean Association of Battle Field Team. Later, it turns out that Baek Hayeon is Baek Jeho’s daughter who lives under the same roof as her parents. She also gets closer to Yeop as Yeop trains her swordsmanship skills and brings her closer to victory.

Part 2: Story Of Esper’s Game

Esper's Game Manhwa Read Online

In Esper’s Game, South Koreans are famous for their unmatchable expertise in playing the legendary action VR-based game called Battle Field. The public seems to never move on from the late Seomun Yeop, the legendary Battle Field player who is also the strongest among all Seven Esper Heroes.

Now that Seomun Yeop has already passed away because of his efforts in saving the rest of the Esper Heroes in the dungeon, South Korean Espers have lost their superpowers.

Even Baek Hayeon, the ace in Esper’s Game, is no match against other countries’ National Team members. As South Korea degrades to the most bottom position, Baek Jeho, the coach of the Korean Association of Battle Field Team thinks of resigning.

Just as the 47-year-old Jeho thinks of resigning, he was shocked by his former teacher’s presence, who is none other than the great Seomun Yeop. As we read through Esper’s Game novel, we know that Yeop doesn’t age like his old friend and pupil.

Even though the two have exchanged stories, Yeop constantly expresses his disinterest in playing Battle Field, instead, he wants to enjoy a leisurely life as an ordinary person.

At the same time, Yeop can’t rest while witnessing his beloved pupil’s ability has degraded, and he even trains Baek Hayeon, his daughter, and the rest of the National Team members, in the wrong ways. Yeop once again has to play the game he doesn’t want to play in Esper’s Game manhwa.

Part 3: Meet The Author Of Esper’s Game

Esper's Game by Niccolo

Jeon See-Na is the real name of Niccolo, the author of Esper’s Game. Based on the ways we pronounce the author’s real name, I guess Jeon See-Na is a female author. However, the ways she pictures the Battle Field scene and Seomun Yeop as the manhwa’s MC are close to the ways male authors would do the same things.

Niccolo as the author doesn’t work alone in publishing Esper’s Game. Plan A a.k.a Two-Zero also becomes her assistant in working on the characters and settings artworks. Then, Esper’s Game itself was first published in one of the social media websites’ novel publishers in Korea.

Later on, people seem to enjoy reading how Seomun Yeop is forced to play the game he no longer wants to play in this manhwa. Such things lead more publishers to get permission from the authors, teams, and original publishers, to republish and translate the manhwa.

Until now, we can read Esper’s Game through at least seven different platforms with more than five languages that we can choose from.

At the same time, Esper’s Game isn’t the only novel that Niccolo writes. She has previously written another novel in 2015 before she first published Esper’s Game in 2022. Now, Esper’s Game has already reached more than 30 chapters and still continuing.

Part 4: Alternative To Esper’s Game

Similar to Esper's Game

Esper’s Game is a virtual reality (a.k.a VR) game-based manhwa. It also involves a story about the strongest man in the game. So, if you like Esper’s Game storylines, I would love to recommend Dreame’s Eternal Empire Online: The Rise Of The Mythical Detective. Like Esper’s Game, this novel also focuses on a VR game.

Genesis “Gen” John R. Soteria has almost met his ends after saving Mia, his little sister, from an accident. Soon, he discovers a Simulation Capsule by the famous gaming developer company, Jenova Corp, which leads him to enter the world of Eternal Empire.

The Eternal Empire’s default year is 2101, which means this novel involves the same time-skip scenes as the ones you see in Esper’s Game.

Summary of Eternal Empire Online: The Rise Of The Mythical Detective:

Alternative to Esper's Game

Genesis John R. Soteria has lost his grandfather despite being able to save Mia, his little sister, from a fatal accident. However, Gen hates his good-for-nothing, late grandfather, because of his high-handedness and terrible behavior towards him and his sister when he was alive. So, Gen is angry upon receiving a letter from his late grandfather that sounds like hoovering him.

However, Gen decides to open the letter and continue to read the letter. It is from the letter that he discovers a Simulation Capsule from Jenova Corp. He finds himself in the Eternal Empire world, which is a VR game, as soon as he enters the Capsule world.

There, he enters the Character Creation interface and starts his adventure as Grimm (his avatar), a human in the City of Latona, Komina Kingdom.

As Grimm, Gen’s inventory includes some pieces of bread, bottles of water, and some items from his late grandfather. So, here’s Gen in a VR game city, a game that he originally doesn’t have any intention to play.
